Phoenix Group (now Standard Life)
Cloud Data Engineer, AWS
Built an AWS-based investment data platform for the Asset Management team, serving hundreds of users across financial, actuarial, and ESG workflows in a tightly audited, fast-paced environment. The platform fed day-to-day investment decisions with c.£300bn under management, so timeliness, data quality, and traceability were central requirements rather than nice-to-have engineering concerns.
- Held technical ownership of critical production flows, resolving urgent data issues across fund-manager feeds, enrichment jobs, and downstream reporting.
- Designed and shipped the platform's generalised data-quality framework; configurable checks generate SQL from JSON/front-end rules and feed daily user screens and board-level metrics.
- Optimised a daily BlackRock analytics enrichment feed used for investment insight, reducing runtime from 10 minutes to under 30 seconds.
- Designed ETL for near-terabyte daily ISS ESG raw-file ingests, including parsing, cleaning, storage, and presentation.
- Built event-driven monitoring and Slack alerting around S3, EventBridge, Lambda, and CDK-managed deployments.
- Identified redundant Bloomberg requests and removed an estimated GBP 20,000 in annual data costs.
